Gadde Izzat The indigenous coastal Sámi people named the island Gadde Izzat. Large fishing fleet The Tufjord harbour, facing the sea in the west, has been the base for a large fleet of fishing-boats for more than a thousand years, and most of the fish dried there was exported to Southern Europe. Medieval tofts In Tufjord, you will also find the toft of a medieval church. It is said to have been plundered and burned by Russian pirates in the early 1500s. From 1000 to 60 Before the war 1940 – 45, almost 1000 people lived on the island during the season, and there was a large fishing industry. The mechanization of the fisheries has led to reductions in the number of boats and the amount of fish delivered to the outermost fishing villages. Rolvsøy today has about 60 inhabitants. |
